Garmin Forerunner 945 Multisport Watch In-Depth Review

Ahh yes, the moment you’ve all been waiting for has arrived: The plastic Fenix 5 Plus. Except, wait…not really. Yes, it has everything the Fenix 5 Plus does, but it actually has more. It’s got special sauce both from a hardware and a software standpoint. Which makes sense, it’s almost a year later since the Fenix 5 Plus came out. Sure, the new FR945 gains things like onboard music storage/playback (including Spotify), as well as contactless payments and SPo2 readings. All staples of more recent Garmin wearables. But it goes beyond those too. It also takes in all of the new features of the $1,500 Garmin MARQ watches, including temperature and altitude acclimation as well as more detailed training load/focus metrics. And while they were at it, it joins almost every other 2019 Garmin device in adopting the Sony GPS chipsets – which in turn gives it longer battery life (though, not without some downsides I’ll dive into). Now this wasn’t the only device released today. In fact, Garmin released two other series: The Forerunner 245/245 Music and the Forerunner 45/45S, which are at lower price points. Atop that, Garmin also announced new female health tracking – and it’s actually incred...

AT&T, Exxon and Other Merrill Lynch Defensive Stock Picks (NYSE: T) (NYSE: XOM)

The signs are everywhere, and now the stock market, which has traded sideways for the past year and a half, is looking somewhat vulnerable. The culprit? The potential for the first recession in years. A recession is a macroeconomic term that refers to a significant decline in general economic activity in a region, country or the entire world that goes on for more than a few months. A true recession is typically visible in industrial production, employment, real income and wholesale-retail trade. The technical definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country’s gross domestic product. While we are a long way from two quarters of negative economic growth, the signs are increasing and becoming more ominous. All this negative data comes when the overall market has had the best June since 1938, and there is a possibility that President Trump and Chinese President Xi could come to some agreement at the G-20 meeting in Osaka, Japan, this weekend. In addition, Federal Reserve Chair Powell has all but signaled that the Fed is poised to lower interest rates, and many think he will in July. This is one of Wall Street’s most prefe...

PCa Recurrence Predictors in Whole Gland Cryotherapy Identified

It may be possible to better predict biochemical recurrence (BCR) after primary whole gland cryotherapy for prostate cancer (PCa), according to Canadian researchers.1 They identified several robust disease-specific and early postoperative predictors of BCR. They hypothesize that these risk factors may be useful when counseling men prior to cryoablation.  Adam Kinnaird, MD, PhD, of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and colleagues explained that multiple randomized clinical trials have demonstrated similar rates of BCR with primary whole gland cryotherapy compared with radiation therapy and several studies have examined risk factors of BCR after radical prostatectomy (RP). However, few data are available on men undergoing primary whole gland cryotherapy. Dr Kinnaird’s team conducted a retrospective analysis of 350 patients who received primary whole gland cryotherapy from 2007 to 2017 at a single large tertiary referral center. The primary outcome for this investigation was BCR, defined by Phoenix criteria (PSA nadir + 2.0 ng/mL). At a median follow-up of 38.6 months, BCR occurred in 119 patients (34%). Older age and high- and very high-risk disease, as defined by National Co...

Current opens doors to outdoor SSL product development and manufacturing practices (MAGAZINE)

MAURY WRIGHT visited the Hendersonville, NC facility of Current for two days of presentations on outdoor lighting and smart cities, and reports on insight gained in the company’s approach to product development, manufacturing, and logistics. Current, powered by GE held a two-day, outdoor-lighting-focused event at its manufacturing facility in Hendersonville, NC back in June with a program focused on product development, manufacturing, and advanced outdoor applications in the connected smart lighting era. The event was mostly focused at customers from organizations including municipalities and utilities, but a few editors were also able to attend the presentations and take a factory tour. The visit provided unusually candid access to executives and a chance to grasp the challenges that solid-state lighting (SSL) manufacturers face given the conflicting market expectations of lower pricing for constantly-improving LED-based outdoor luminaires.  After RJ Darling, general manager for roadway and intelligent cities at Current, welcomed the crowd and made introductions, the program immediately launched into the obstacles faced by an outdoor lighting manufacturer — especially one focus...

Interview: Mixed Media Photography Translates Japanese Mono no Aware

Artist Casper Faassen creates work that oscillates two worlds. Through his Asia Series, the Netherlands-based creative fuses photography and painting to create works that, while featuring real humans and ceramic objects, give off the impression that they are fleeting figments of our imagination. Faassen has a deep interest in the traditional culture of Japan. The concept of Mono no Aware has been particularly influential in the development of Asia Series. Mono no Aware translates to “a sensitivity to ephemera,” and it’s a term communicating the wistful awareness of impermanence in life. In accepting the inevitability that all things will pass, it is a reminder for us to cherish—and make the most of—the moments when they are in “full bloom.” The pieces in Asia Series are soft and out of focus. The subtle imagery is the result of Faassen’s mixed media approach. His blurred subjects aren’t photographed with a low depth of field. Instead, he places the models, blossoms, and ceramic vessels behind a frosted sheet of acrylic, also known as setasand. The photographs are printed on this same matte material, and Faassen applies thin layers of oil and acrylic paint to the images. Each con...

VR multiplayer shooter Pavlov is coming to Oculus Quest without cross-play with Rift

Pavlov is coming to the Oculus Quest according to developer Dave Villz. Pavlov is a multiplayer shooter that has often been likened to a VR version of Counter-Strike. It currently sits at 89% positive reviews on Steam, and is a frequently recommended buy in the VR community. Pavlov was first hinted at coming to Quest all the way back in September, just days after the headset was announced. A fan asked Villz whether he intended to bring it to Quest, and he replied “if tracking is as good as they claim then for sure”. If that statement holds, he must have been satisfied with the tracking quality of the headset. The game won’t support cross-play with PC VR however. Villz claims that this is because PC players with higher refresh rate headsets, such as the upcoming Valve Index, would have an unfair advantage over Quest players with just 72 Hz. The Index can go all the way up to 144 Hz in an “experimental” mode. The recently released Oculus Rift S has a refresh rate of 80Hz, so this seems to be where Villz draws the line. The Quest version also obviously won’t have access to the community made maps on Steam Workshop. There will not be an equivalent system either...
