LED driver architectures meet demanding application requirements (MAGAZINE)

Advanced applications such as lighting for health and trends such as connected lighting result in even greater reliance on a robust driver architecture, reports MAURY WRIGHT. The LED driver is now typically the most expensive element in a solid-state lighting (SSL) product. Five or six years back, the LEDs often represented more than 50% of the bill of materials of a general illumination fixture, but now the driver is far more costly than the packaged LEDs in most luminaires. Meanwhile, the driver design must enable flicker-free output and long life at a minimum. Most products also support dimming of some type, often with the expectation of smooth dimming to extremely low levels. Indeed, driver developers face these challenges before even getting to specialty applications. For instance, drivers for outdoor, horticultural, or hazardous applications may need enhanced environmental protection. Increasingly popular tunable-white products for applications such as human-centric lighting need multiple channels. And of course connected lighting is coming to all applications and impacting the driver. Read on for a look at some of the latest innovations in driver design. Let’s start off w...

Drivers As Assemblers: A Closer Look At Last-Mile Freight Delivery

As autonomous driving technology companies test their vehicles on public roads and gather data at its wake, there are several driving-related jobs that might be at risk over the next decade. Driving autonomy is expected to make early inroads into the long-haul freight market before venturing into self-driving across urban spaces, as it is easier to navigate highways than crowded city streets. There are instances of limited deployment of semi-autonomous long-haul trucks in the U.S. already, such as UPS, which has been delivering cargo using self-driving trucks between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, since May 2019. However, there are still segments within the trucking industry that cannot be automated, including the last-mile segment where truckers are customer-facing in addition to hauling cargo. FreightWaves spoke with Doug Ladden, the CEO of Deliveright, a last-mile delivery network, to discuss the daily lives of truckers who also double up as last-mile assemblers.  “Most people think of truckers as people who drive tractor-trailers, who may or may not be involved in loading or unloading a truck, which is usually done by people at the warehouse where the tractor-trailer end...

‘Letters From Hollywood’: When Film Stars Slid Into Each Others’ Telegrams : NPR

Audrey Hepburn appears as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. In a letter to director George Cukor, she raved about the script. AP hide caption Audrey Hepburn appears as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. In a letter to director George Cukor, she raved about the script. Ingrid Bergman was a so-so typist. Katharine Hepburn’s signature was indecipherable. Marlene Dietrich signed her letter to Ernest Hemingway as “Your Kraut.” A collection of letters, memos, telegrams and other written communiques from the golden age of Hollywood are collected in a new book. Letters from Hollywood, edited and compiled by Barbara Hall and Rocky Lang, is a delicious peek into very famous people’s private lives. Take Audrey Hepburn. On screen, she was perfection: the bangs, the long cigarette-holder in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the lavish hat at Ascot in My Fair Lady. In 1963, after seeing the My Fair Lady script for the first time, she wrote the director (in perfect schoolgirl penmanship) of her delight. It’s MARVELLOUS, I am beyond myself with happiness and excitement! It is all so good and so solid, warm funny and enchanting. I just pray every day to be as good as the r...

Drivers of concrete agitators have a common list of gripes about the trucks they are employed

Drivers of concrete agitators have a common list of gripes about the trucks they are employed to drive in combinations of frantic schedules and heavy traffic. Mercedes-Benz in Europe has developed a solution for all three, with its new Econic concrete agitator truck. Britain’s largest road- building company, Tarmac, has ordered 25 Econic 3235 L concrete mixers and tippers for use on London construction sites. The trucks are based on the four-axle, 32-tonne Mercedes- Benz Econic chassis that recently received the Tipper Safety Trophy in the Tip-ex and Tank-ex Awards for the high standard of its tipper safety features. Cab access on the Econic is hard to fault, with wide opening, floor to ceiling doors — split fold on the passenger’s side — and a floor height that’s just a single step up from the road. No more climbing up three steps over a front wheel arch. My most recent interview with a concrete truck driver revealed complaints of back strain had forced the manufacturer to install an extra step as the gap between the standard steps was too wide. Motorists may think that’s a bit fussy but these operators are in and out of their trucks a couple of dozen times a day, often on dod...

Solar adds another two highly shreddable electrics to the Type S series

Ola Englund’s Solar Guitars has dropped another two super-shreddable electric guitars to the Type S series – the S1.6 Poplar Purple Burl and the S2.6FBL Flame Blue Matte. Both guitars are typified by the Type S series’ aggressive contouring and weaponised reverse headstock. Both share an incredible spec for the price. And anyone who has played one of Solar’s Type S guitars will know what they are in for – great playability, powerful tone . . . In sum, a guitar built for metal. The Type S1.6 Poplar Purple Burl has a mahogany body with a quite stunning poplar burl top, and a five-ply maple and jotoba neck and ebony fretboard with the Solar logo inlay at the 12th fret.  The hardware and electronics are pretty tasty too, with 18:1 Solar locking tuners and an EverTune bridge, and two Duncan Solar pickups in neck and bridge. The Type S2.6FBL in Flame Blue Matte shares much of the S1.6′s DNA. The scale is the same, the Solar Duncan humbuckers with five-way blade switch and volume and tone controls. You’ve also got the super-fast neck with 24 extra jumbo frets and a very flat 13.78-inch fretboard radius that is tailor-made for those whose playing style is s...

Lunch with a side of pigeon poop? SF orders Eat Club delivery hub closed

Lunch is off the menu at a warehouse run by Eat Club, a Redwood City startup that delivers food to companies that offer catered meals as an employee perk. The San Francisco Department of Public Health ordered the company on May 7 to stop operations at its distribution hub South of Market, where it packages food for delivery. Veronica Vien, a public information officer for the health department, said an inspector responded to a complaint a few days earlier. “The investigation revealed that Eat Club was operating without a valid health permit to operate at this location,” Vien said in an email. The department issued a cease-and-desist order. The company said it has served more than 18 million meals since its founding in 2010, and its customers include TaskRabbit, Upwork, Mastercard and Flipboard, according to the company website. Photos and video reviewed by The Chronicle show tables and a metal rack, where sealed containers of food are packaged for delivery, covered in a white slime that appears to be pigeon poop. In one video, a person uses a broom to try to sweep a live mouse into a mousetrap. Other images show what appear to be pigeon droppings on empty delivery bags, sitting...
