Neighborhood Goods announces $11 million in funding, new Austin store

In the retail industry, a company known as Neighborhood Goods is finding success by creating spaces for brands, old and new, to sell in. In many ways, Neighborhood Goods is following the basic department store model: opening larger-format locations where brands can carve out dedicated shelf space to sell merchandise, acting as a wholesale partner. But the Texas-based business bills itself as “a new type of department store.” And it’s expanding as the likes of Macy’s, J.C. Penney and Kohl’s are struggling to keep their doors open. Neighborhood Goods only has one shop today in Plano, Texas, which opened late last year. It will open a second in New York, in the Meatpacking District neighborhood, before this year is over. And it announced on Wednesday a third location coming to South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, in 2020. Beyond that, Neighborhood Goods says it’s planning to roll out “a few” more locations next year. Co-founder Matt Alexander said in an interview with CNBC that he can see the company getting to the point where it opens a new shop as rapidly as every three to four months. “That general cadence feels about righ...

UK-based Admiral Tapes is launching Edge-Tex, a self-adheisve PVC strip that is used to lock printed fabric into the channel of aluminium (LED, back-lit and front-lit frames) to create a flat tensioned surface. The product is intended to remove the need to use an industrial sewing machine as it can be applied by hand, simplifying installation of printed graphics.  Admiral says the special adhesive system ingresses into the fabric to provide a strong long-term bond. Tested: Hydro Flask’s First Insulated Hydration Pack

When you buy something using the retail links in our stories, we may earn a small commission. Outside does not accept money for editorial gear reviews. Read more about our policy. I still remember when I bought my first hydration pack. It was school bus yellow (because all gear in the early ’90s was school bus yellow), and the whole concept of putting a bladder of water inside my backpack was a game changer. Twenty-five or so years after I bought that yellow pack, Hydro Flask added another twist to the hydration game with its new series of Journey packs (10L, $165; 20L, $200), which have an insulation system designed to keep water cold for up to four hours.  Hydro Flask made a name for itself by producing stylish insulated mugs, bottles, and cups before expanding into soft goods, first with the introduction of soft-sided coolers, and now with this series of hydration packs made specifically for mountain biking that come in ten-liter and 20-liter options. Both packs feature a three-liter insulated bladder that slips inside a built-in neoprene sleeve lined with reflective material (think: emergency blankets). The whole system is designed to keep the cold in and the heat out. I too...

Most customers want efficient air filters to remove particulates and improve their Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).  Unfortunately, air filters sometimes cause poor IAQ. Let’s take a look at air filter related IAQ problems and how you can both avoid and resolve them for your customers. It’s a challenge to write an article when you know its message may create some temporary disagreement. Nevertheless, after three decades of writing for HVAC trade magazines, I witnessed many times how disagreements can turn to understanding and produce long-term industry advancement. This happens once the principles of the issue are understood and addressed. It’s important to look closely at the advantages and disadvantages that may be caused by air filters. IAQ DefinitionsCapturing Particulates – Most popular definitions of IAQ are extracted from technical and marketing material promoting an air filter’s ability to reduce building pollutants. This definition fo...

By Dawn Undurraga, Nutritionist, Nneka Leiba, Director of Healthy Living Science, Melanie Benesh, Legislative Attorney and Scott Faber, Vice President of Government Affairs Americans are increasingly seeking “clean” foods that are free from artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. But although consumers who want to avoid toxic pesticides and antibiotics know to look for foods that are certified organic, many don’t know that federal rules also dramatically limit the use of synthetic substances in packaged organic foods like cereals, snacks and dressings. No artificial preservatives, colors or flavors are ever allowed in organic food. Fewer than 40 synthetic substances can be used in organic packaged foods, and only after they have been reviewed by independent and government experts. By contrast, thousands1 of chemicals2 can be added to conventional packaged foods, including preservatives, flavors and colors linked to health problems. What’s more, many consumers are unaware that food companies don’t need government approval for most of the chemicals added to conventional packaged foods. The same companies that manufacture these chemicals are allowed simply to declare that the...

It is likely that marine debris kills hundreds of thousands of sea birds, turtles, and marine

It is likely that marine debris kills hundreds of thousands of sea birds, turtles, and marine mammals each year. Every year, an estimated eight million metric tons of land-based plastic enters the world’s oceans. But when marine researchers have measured how much of this plastic is floating on the water’s surface, swirling in offshore gyres—most notably, the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch, between Hawaii and California—they have only found quantities on the order of hundreds of thousands of tons, or roughly one per cent of all the plastic that has ever gone into the ocean. Part of the explanation for this is that all plastic eventually breaks down into microplastic, and, although this takes some polymers decades, others break down almost immediately, or enter the ocean as microplastic already (like the synthetic fibres that pill off your fleece jacket or yoga pants in the washing machine). Scientists have recently found tiny pieces of plastic falling with the rain in the high mountains, including France’s Pyrenees and the Colorado Rockies. British researchers collected amphipods (shrimplike crustaceans) from six of the world’s deepest ocean trenches and found that eighty ...

Top 15 Best Portable Tire Inflators and Air Compressors

With some modern vehicles coming equipped with run flat tires and tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), a common misconception is that a portable tire inflator or air compressor is no longer a necessity. But that’s not the case because tires can lose air over time even if you don’t have a puncture. Owning your own tire inflator means you can conveniently and routinely check your tire pressure, making sure they’re in an optimal range. Underinflated or overinflated tires can have a myriad of adverse effects on your driving experience, potentially affecting your fuel economy and tire wear. Purchasing a tire inflator is a small investment in helping make sure your tires last as long as possible, saving you money in the long run. Truth be told, there isn’t a whole lot differentiating the portable tire inflators or air compressors available on the market. But some are manufactured better than others, which makes them more reliable and likely to last a long time. If time is important to you, you’ll want to see which products inflate a tire quicker, while others have a maximum pressure limit. Lastly, you’ll want to pay attention to whether the product uses a 12-volt car outlet or a s...

Virgin Hyperloop One is still planning to transform transportation for

An award-winning team of journalists, designers, and videographers who tell brand stories through Fast Company’s distinctive lens Jay Walder is tired. The Virgin Hyperloop One CEO has been on the road preaching the hyperloop gospel to local communities that one day may end up as a stop on the futuristic transport model’s route.  And he’s got props to make the case, hauling along a test pod with him on the road, because the Hyperloop is so futuristic that it’s difficult to comprehend what it will look like and how it will work. (Personally, I keep envisioning it as a cross between a hamster’s Habitrail and a 19th-century library’s pneumatic tube system). “I often tell people to come to Vegas and see the test facility,” says Walder, who reminds me a bit of the monorail salesman from The Simpsons. “When people are able to come, they say to me that this completely changed their perception of it. Unfortunately, you can’t bring everybody to our test facility. And so we decided to take Hyperloop on the road.” The Virgin Hyperloop One roadshow offers people a peek at what the future just might look like—and also to dispel myths along the way (like the idea posited in a CNN article...
