SAN ANTONIO – As part of a wider set of gun safety measures, 17,000 gun locks are now available for free to Bexar County gun owners. Standing side-by-side, officials from the University Health System, Via Metropolitan Transit, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, and Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar unveiled both an advertising campaign promoting the safe storage of firearms and the availability of the trigger and cable locks that make that safe storage possible. The locks were paid for with a county grant to the University Health Fund, and VIA is providing free advertisement for the “Be Smart, Keep Children Safe, Secure Your Guns” campaign, a county spokeswoman said. “We just want to make sure the kiddos are safe,” Salazar said. “It’s not a matter of taking anybody’s guns. It’s not a matter of infringing on anybody’s rights.” To highlight the importance of safe firearm handling, Salazar mentioned two accidental shooting incidents involving minors during his remarks. On Sep. 28, a 13-year-old was killed after being shot in the head by a 14-year-old with an AR-15 style rifle. The 14-year-old was arrested for manslaughter, and his grandfather was arrested for making the weapo...

Remasterings of recordings make me angry—they mess with my memories of the songs I love, especially songs from the 1960s that I played in my bedroom on a cheap Garrard turntable through Lafayette speakers. Like my first girlfriend, these songs permanently entered my psyche and modified my DNA. When songs I’ve heard a thousand times are remastered or remixed, they sound wrong and weird to me. They make my inner hard drive skip as I try to figure out what was changed, and why. This is especially true with Beatles reissues. One day, in high school, the nerdy girl who sat in front of me in math turned around and said, “The Beatles are coming! The Beatles are coming!” I groaned and rolled my eyes. I didn’t like the Beatles. Hipsters like me gave no mind to the British Invasion. I was the right age, but where I grew up, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett trumped all that Liverpudlian pop. I didn’t like the Beatles until they stopped playing stadiums and started making statement albums that merged art, pop music, and light social commentary. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, released in the US on June 2, 1967, was the first Beatles record I bought....

To get the best sleep possible, we invest in the best mattresses and pillows that our budgets allow. But the journey to dreamland doesn’t just stop there: You need quality bed linens too. When it’s time to buy sheets, many people simply assume that the higher the thread count, the better, and make their choice based on this feature alone. While it’s true that thread count (a measurement of how many threads run vertically and horizontally in one square inch of fabric) is important, it turns out that there’s another factor that plays a bigger part in sheet comfort: type of fabric. In fact, according to Consumer Reports, there’s no reason to pay extra...

Review: Belkin BOOST CHARGE Power Bank 2K for Apple Watch

The Belkin BOOST↑CHARGE Power Bank 2K for Apple Watch (all series) is exactly what it says – a Qi wireless charger and power bank for an Apple Watch. Design-wise the BOOST↑CHARGE Power Bank 2K is about the size of a matchbox (79 x 42 x 17mm x 70g) in basic black with a white concave magnetic charge plate. On one end is a micro-USB socket for 5V/2.1A (maximum) charging and four LEDs to approximately indicate 25% increments of charge. Under the bonnet, it is a 3.83V, 8426Wh, 2200mAh battery which is to power the 200-300mAh (approx) Apple Watch battery. The Qi charge plate outputs 5V/1A or 5W. It came indicating 75% charge, so we set about topping the rest up. No charger comes with it, but a 180mm short USB-A to micro-USB cable is in the box. Using a 5V/2A charger it took over an hour indicating a full charge at around four hours. In one further subsequent test from almost 0-100%, it took just over five hours. This is slower than expected. We would love to say that a 5W (5V/1A) Qi charger works as fast as a 5W wall charger but by it nature Qi seldom achieves over 70% efficiency. As a control, we ran down an Apple Watch 4 (easy to do if you use GPS) and charged from its genuine char...

The truth is, many of us have very different opinions on what the ultimate set of bed sheets should feel like. To find your dream bed sheets and get the best night’s sleep possible, you’ll have to start by identifying your own sleep personality. You may already know your sleep personality (I’ll take a crisp percale over a silky sateen any day!), but if you’re not sure, the questions below can help guide you. From there, check out our bed sheet recommendations below, arranged by personality type. About you: You love the classics, and to you, a good bed sheet has to be made of breathable, lightweight cotton (no synthetics around here, please!). Your dream bedding: When we think of the quintessential cotton bed sheet, it’s likely percale we’re dreaming of. It’s known for being light and breathable, so it will keep you cool, even through the hottest nights of summer. Percale is smooth to t...

Time to ‘spring forward’ and replace smoke, CO alarm batteries: London Fire Department

But now’s a good time to change the clocks and to also practice fire safety, according to the London Fire Department. “Some smoke alarms have the dates on the outside of the alarm, others will have it on the inside,” he said. “Take a look on the inside where the battery is installed, or where it’s connected through the electrical plug.” When installing new alarms, the deputy chief says certain alarms must be placed in certain locations. “Smoke alarms need to be installed on every floor level of the home or outside sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms need to be installed adjacent to the sleeping areas within the home as well.” Get a roundup of the most important and intriguing national stories delivered to your inbox every weekday.
